US RRS App

2/13/2017 4:42 pm

The US Sailing RRS app is currently only available for iPhone products.  The android version will be out soon.

Yes, the old app was slick, but expensive to maintain and support was discontinued. If you have the old app, you may want to keep it and use the new app to reference the rule changes.

US Sailing has gone to a “bookstore” type format (not really sure what that means) so things will be PDF.

All of the links are in the new app.  Currently, to link to a document that is on US Sailing’s server, you must be “on line” to access the documents.  SAYRA reps are checking to see if it will be possible in the future to download the other source documents and then link to them.

Feedback from active app users.

  • The app is a scanned copy of the rule book. The smaller the device, the harder it is to read. iPads, no problem. iPhone, you will likely use in landscape mode to read it, and for older iPhones, you may want to expand the page and scroll back and forth to read the lines as they do not wrap.

  • You need to have internet connection, either wi-Fi or cellular to reference Dave Perry’s book, else you won’t be able to see the applicable parts of Dave’s book. This affects the iPad more than the iPhone.

  • The Table of Contents lists the Parts and Appendices. When you tap the Part or Appendix you want, you are taken to the beginning of that Part or Appendix. You then scroll down to the rule you want.

  • The tapping motion to bring up a definition, rule, or part of Dave’s book is similar to the hyper-links in the old app. If you are using a device that can only see part of the page, when you return to the rule book after tapping, you are taken back to the top of the page where you were and you need to find your place again.

  • The search feature is limited. You can search for 16, but not for 16.2. When you type in the period, it says “no results found”.

  • Some uses have reported that sometimes when they startup the app, the app freezes the iPhone.

  • With this format, we will need to see how changes to the rule book are handled.
