Commodores Notes March

Greetings from the Helm,

Happy Spring! Many exciting things going on in SAYRA, I have spent my winter sailing as many in SAYRA have in Florida, it is amazing to see how well SAYRA sailors are doing in the different regattas; well done to all who have sailed all winter!

A testament to SAYRA leadership and race management is our own Chip Till has been the PRO for many of the Winter Series and other races in Florida, Chip is wonderful for our sport as we all need good PROs to be able to race; think you might want to be a better PRO; make sure you attend the Race Management Course April 18-22.

Junior sailors make sure to sign up for the Smythe and Bemis May 14/15 at Carolina Yacht Club, SC.

I want to welcome our newest club to SAYRA Waccamaw Sailing Club; Waccamaw is a great club in Eastern, NC about an hour from Wilmington.

PHRF Offshore Championship Series

The SAYRA 2022 PHRF Offshore Championship Series is a series of events that is not only challenging for the competitors but promotes participation and fun for all who compete. This Series will consist of several SAYRA member clubs' existing regattas and races, whose results will be used to gain points towards the SAYRA 2022 PHRF Offshore Championship. Points shall be awarded for both participation and performance throughout the series. Santa Elena Regatta BYSC

Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club

The Santa Elena Regatta, a major big boat sailing event in Beaufort, consists of two days of competitive racing and social events. A combination of the Jean Ribault Cup and the Pedro Menendez Cup, it celebrates the founding of Santa Elena on Parris Island in the spring of 1566. Both events have racing and cruising classes. Boats can participate in either day of racing but must participate in to be eligible for the Santa Elena Regatta overall award.

Welcome Waccamaw Sailing Club

Lake Waccamaw is a 3.5 mile x 5.5 miles oval lake located about 45 miles from the coast near Whiteville, NC. The lake is relatively shallow and the proximity to the coast allows for afternoon sea breezes to cmbine for great sailing in the summer. Our facilities have bathrooms, hot showers, full kitchen, and there are provisions for onsite boat storage. Activities include club races, socials, regattas, shrimp boil, oyster roasts and lots of fun around the water.

Big events this year include the ALLIGATOR RUN REGATTA April 9-10th! 2 days of racing for monohulls and multihulls. Full details HERE.Registration

US Sailing is expanding their successful Sievel Sailors program to further increase opportunities and diversity in the sprot of sailing. We are seeking sailing centers who what to deepen the impact on their community and join US Sailing in a long-term approach of engaging and retaining new sailors! Applicaiton deadline June 1, 2022.
