Greetings from the Helm, 

Happy Fall!   You should be making plans to attend the US Sailing NATIONAL SAILING PROGRAMS SYMPOSIUM, NSPS will be returning in person in 2022.  This year it is in the SAYRA Region at the DeSoto Savannah January 27-29 with the SAYRA annual meeting at the tail end on January 30th. Look for detailed Annual Meeting information late October. 

The premier event for sailing education in the United States. NSPS is the only conference of its kind that brings together program directors, instructors, volunteers, Club leadership and industry representatives to share and learn best practices with one another about running, maintaining and improving sailing programs and member experiences. 

SAYRA is seeking nominations for the following awards no later than Dec. 1st: 

  • H Willard Davis Service Award
  • The SAYRA Sportsmanship Award,
  • The John Bonds Service Award 
  •  Brotherhood of International Mark Boat Operators (BIMBO Award)

Congratulations to Conner Blouin, College of Charleston Assistant Sailing Coach for his win at the Champions of Champions. Thomas Mazzeo, of South Carolina Yacht Club for representing SAYRA in the Chubb Junior Championships Singlehanded (SMYTHE TROPHY).   Eddie Evans and team for representing SAYRA and Matt Seif and team for representing Charleston Yacht Club in the US Offshore Championship Championship.  Also very big congratulations to Daniel Escudero (AtlYC) 1st place ILCA7 and Ben Smith (CYCNC) 3rd place ILCA6 for their podium finishes at the Youth Sailing Championships in NC. 

If you or your team is interested in competing in US Sailing Championship events or the SAYRA Club Championships you should attend the SAYRA Annual Meeting in January to learn more!

2021 Championship of Champions Recap
Conner Blouin Wins US Sailing
Championship of Champions in the Lightning

“It was really tough sailing, so consistency paid,” said Conner Blouin, 2021 Championship of Champions winner. After three days of challenging sailing, Blouin and his crew, Jo Fisher and Sam Blouin, came out on top of the unique regatta that tests both skill and adaptability. 

The Championship of Champions is contested by sailors who are One-Design class U.S. National Champions, North American Champions, or World Champions. This year’s regatta was contested in the Lightning and hosted by Pontiac Yacht Club on Cass Lake, Michigan. CONTINUED...

SAYRA x2 at Offshore Champs

Eight teams representing their respective US Sailing Areas from regions around the country competed for the Lloyd Phoenix Trophy in Annapolis, Md. at the 2021 U.S. Offshore Sailing Championship. The Regatta is hosted by the United States Naval Academy and is sailed on Navy 44 MK II sloops. Great job team!! Both Teams represented multiple clubs from the Charleston area: 

Team 1 lead by Matt Seif (Patrick Chisum, Mark Earle, Cameron Rylance, Emily Zogas, Ben Reavis, Paul Mallory) 

Team 2 lead by Eddie Evans (Josh Evans, Brett Hahulski, Ken Juergens, Ken King, Kirk Weichsel, Randy Draftz). 

2021 U.S. Youth Sailing Championships

Congratulations to the 3 SAYRA sailors participating at the 2021 Youth Championships at Camp Sea Gull in NC. Over 150 athletes participated in what is known as the best of the best! Conditions were tough with high winds, swells and rain. Congratulations to all the sailors and thank you to the SAYRA volunteers for supporting the event.

US Sailing Instructor Course AYC

Atl YC is hosting a Level 1 Instructor course November 6-7, available to anyone 16 or older. There are several prerequisites, including a 2-week online course that must be completed by November 5. The online course requires weekend participation in Zoom classes, so you must register in advance. Columbia SC Midlands Regatta Nov. 5-7

Columbia Sailing Club invites you to our 62nd Annual Midlands Regatta -- famous throughout the Southeast as a weekend of fun on and off the water. Two days of racing on waters still warm enough to swim in. Friday evening happy hour and a Saturday evening party with a live band and food trucks on site. For the juniors a Saturday pizza party with entertainment at the beach house. Our Junior course will host Optimist (Green, Red, White and Blue) and Open Skiff. Other classes include the Sunfish, Laser (Full, Radial and 4.7), Sunfish and C420. The Midlands Regatta will also be the final stop for the SAYRA Junior Grand Prix Championship Series. We're set for a great weekend that you won't want to miss.

Please join us for our annual Fall 48 regatta. We've made some great renovations to the clubhouse and even added a new patio and firepit that should be perfect for this time of year. We'll have chili on Friday night for the early arrivals. Saturday we'll have baked chicken, lasagna and all the trimmings for dinner. Camping is free on the grounds and there are showers available at the clubhouse and the pavilion.
