AYC Sailors Sweep 2018 Y-Flyer National Championship

Sailors from the Atlanta Yacht Club (AYC) won the senior, women’s and junior divisions at the 2018 Y-Flyer National Championship, held July 9 – 13 at Harbor Island Yacht Club (HIYC) in Nashville. SAYRA Commodore Bryce Dryden and his crew Mandy Hofmeister, HIYC, won the 2018 Y-Flyer National Championship regatta, and twin sisters Lucy and Ellie Spearman, 15, won the 2018 Y-Flyer National Junior Championship. The girls were the top female finishers in the senior division (8th), earning them the Y-Flyer National Women’s Championship title as well.

Regatta conditions were light for the week. In the senior division, 10 races were scheduled over a three-day period, but conditions were only favorable for racing one day. On that day, four races were held. Bryce and Mandy finished with a 3-2-1-1, ahead of second-place finishers Paul and Marie Abdullah (Florida YC) by 4 points.

Six boats raced in the junior division. Four races were held over two days, and Lucy and Ellie won with a 4-1-1-1.  The day after the awards banquet, Lucy and Ellie flew to Long Beach, N.J., for the 2018 C420 US National Championship then on to Mentor, Ohio for the Ida Lewis Junior Women’s Double-Handed Championship.

By winning the Y-Flyer National Championship, Bryce qualifies to compete in the 2018 Championship of Champions regatta to be held October 18 – 21 at AYC.  For this regatta, US Sailing selects up to 19 competitors from nominees by their class associations who are current national or North American champions. The championship is held in a different class each year, and this year the regatta will be sailed in Y-Flyers.
